The stock ignition coil is usually one of the weakest areas for these industrial air-cooled engines. As they as you are only as strong as your weakest link. To have the best engine Tillotson could offer for the 196 class we researched the best supplier for the strongest analog ignition coil. You can usually determine the Tillotson Spec ignition from others by measuring the girth of the coil body.
It's common for stock ignition to retard timing as the RPMs go up and often costing you valuable power. If allowed we recommend using a digital ignition like the ones made by PVL(PVL is a company name not a type of ignition) This would require flywheels specially designed for digital ignitions. These ignition coils are stronger and only change timing for the engine to start.
To get the most from your analog ignition coils set coil or air gam to: .035” on most billet, racing flywheels. .012-.015” on stock flywheels. To close or too far away can simulate rev limiting effects or carburetor and fuel delivery problems.
