Description

Welch Plug for Tillotson PK Carburetors – 8mm Low Side Circuit Cover

The 8mm Welch Plug (also known as a soft plug) is designed to seal the low-side fuel circuit on Tillotson PK-series stock carburetors used on popular small-block racing engines such as the Tillotson 196R and 212R. This plug ensures proper carburetor operation by sealing internal fuel passages, preventing debris intrusion, and maintaining consistent fuel delivery.

Important Fitment Information

This Welch Plug fits Tillotson PK-series clone carburetors only.
It does not fit Ruixing, or most other stock-style carburetors.
Always verify your carburetor model and measure your existing plug before ordering to ensure compatibility.

Welch Plug Specifications

  • Diameter: 8mm (0.312")
  • Material: Soft metal plug designed to expand and create a tight seal when installed under compression
  • Function: Seals the low-side metering circuit on Tillotson PK carburetors

When to Replace a Welch Plug

Welch plugs typically remain installed for the life of the carburetor. Replacement or removal is recommended when:

  • Rebuilding or modifying the low-side fuel circuit
  • Resolving issues caused by hidden debris or clogged passages
  • Performing carburetor blueprinting or advanced tuning
  • Diagnosing inconsistent low-rpm performance

Caution: Removing a Welch plug must be done carefully to avoid damaging the carburetor casting or internal fuel passages.

Installation Instructions

  • Welch plugs are press-fit using a punch or installation tool.
  • No epoxy or sealant is required.
  • For best results, use our Welch Plug Installation Tool (Part #753) available in the Carburetor Tools section.

FAQ

What does the Welch Plug do on a Tillotson PK carburetor?

The Welch Plug seals the low-side fuel metering circuit, keeping the internal passage pressurized and protected from debris. A proper seal ensures stable idle and low-rpm fuel delivery.

How do I know this 8mm plug fits my carburetor?

This plug fits Tillotson PK-series carburetors only (PK-1A, PK-1B, PK-3A). It does not fit Ruixing or most generic clone carburetors. Measure your original plug and verify the carb model stamped on your carburetor.

Do I need sealant or epoxy when installing this plug?

No. Welch plugs are press-fit and seal through compression. No glue or epoxy is needed if installed correctly.

When should I replace a Welch Plug?

Only when:

  • Rebuilding the carburetor
  • Cleaning blocked low-side passages
  • Performing blueprinting or circuit modification
  • The plug becomes loose or damaged

Otherwise, Welch plugs are normally lifetime components.

How do I remove a Welch Plug without damaging the carburetor?

Carefully pierce the plug with a pick and pry it out gently. Avoid scratching the carburetor body or distorting the sealing surface.

What tool should I use to install the new plug?

Use a flat punch or our Welch Plug Installation Tool (Part #753) for best results. Tap lightly and evenly to avoid deforming the plug.

Will this help fix idle issues or inconsistent low-rpm fuel delivery?

If the low-side passage is clogged or the original plug is leaking, replacing the Welch Plug can restore stable idle and throttle response.
