Description

DynoCams 335-CL-TSB billet Camshaft for Modified Predator 224 & Wildcat 223 Engines

The DynoCams 335-CL-TSB is a moderate-lift, extreme-duration racing camshaft engineered for highly restricted and stock-appearing modified engines where airflow is limited by carburetor size, valve size, or class rules. Featuring one of the longest duration profiles available for the clone platform, the 335-CL-TSB is designed to maximize mid-to-top-end power in combinations that rely on RPM rather than valve lift to move air.

Big-duration camshafts like the 335-CL-TSB excel in applications with flow restrictions, such as spec carburetor classes, stock-appearing engines, or builds limited to small venturi carburetors. Compared to the 310 grind, the 335-CL-TSB offers additional valve lift, making it better suited for higher-flowing cylinder heads while still retaining the long-duration characteristics required for restricted carburetor setups. This makes it an excellent choice for GX390 / Big Block–style carburetors and similar stock-appearing fuel systems.

Racing-Only Powerband Characteristics

Like the F275 and 310 camshafts, the 335-224 features significant overlap, which allows the engine to stay in the powerband at high RPM but comes with tradeoffs:

  • Very rough idle
  • Reduced low-speed torque below ~5,000 RPM
  • Poor part-throttle response
  • Higher clutch or converter engagement required

Because of this, the 335-CL-TSB is not suitable for recreational, cruising, or street-driven applications. It is intended strictly for full-race builds that operate primarily at wide-open throttle.

This camshaft is precision-ground on a billet cam core, eliminating the built-in compression release found on stock cams. As a result, an external electric starter is required for reliable engine starting.

The billet core design increases clearance around the crankshaft compared to stock compression-release cams, making it better suited for high-performance and stroker applications. It also enables precise cam timing adjustments—allowing you to advance or retard the camshaft to fine-tune valve opening and closing events for optimized power delivery across your RPM range.

Ideal for Large-Displacement Small Block Clones

The 335-CL-TSB is especially effective in larger displacement small block clone engines, where increased cubic inches help support its long-duration profile. Recommended applications include:

  • Tillotson 263cc
  • Tillotson 268cc
  • Any small block clone engine over 250cc

These combinations allow the camshaft to fully capitalize on its extended duration without excessively sacrificing torque.

Rocker Arm Recommendations

Due to its lift profile and intended application:

  • Recommended: 1.1 billet roller rockers
  • Not Recommended: 1.2+ ratio rockers

Using rocker ratios above 1.1 can easily push total valve lift beyond .400”, exceeding the airflow limits of most cast cylinder heads. In many stock-appearing builds, airflow begins to stall around .300” lift, meaning additional lift provides little performance benefit while significantly increasing valvetrain stress and wear.

Billet-Core Design & Stroker Compatibility

The 335-CL-TSB is built on a .550” journal billet-core, specifically engineered for modern high-RPM and stroker combinations:

  • Lobe-to-lobe clearancing for 58mm and longer stroke crankshafts
  • No compression release for crank counterweight clearance

This design allows the camshaft to work reliably in Predator 224cc and Tillotson 224cc engines, as well as stroked 196cc and 212cc builds using 58mm or longer crankshafts—without additional crankshaft clearancing.

FAQ

What type of engine build is the 335-CL-TSB camshaft designed for?
This camshaft is built specifically for highly modified racing engines running in restricted or stock-appearing classes where airflow is limited by carburetor size, valve size, or rules.

Is this camshaft suitable for street or recreational use?
No. The 335-CL-TSB is a race-only camshaft with a very rough idle, poor low-speed performance, and requires high RPM operation. It is not suitable for casual riding or street applications.

What RPM range does this camshaft perform best in?
This camshaft is designed for high RPM performance, with an effective operating range up to 8,500–9,000 RPM.

Why does this camshaft use extreme duration instead of higher lift?
In restricted classes, airflow is limited. Longer duration keeps the valves open longer, allowing more air movement at high RPM where lift alone would not improve performance.

Do I need an electric starter with this camshaft?
Yes. This camshaft does not include a compression release, so an external electric starter is required.

What engines is this camshaft compatible with?
It fits Predator 224 Non-Hemi, Wildcat 223 Hemi, Predator 212 Hemi, Tillotson 212E, Ducar engines, and GX200-style clones. It does not fit Predator 212 Non-Hemi or Predator 224 Hemi engines.

What supporting parts are required?
At minimum, you must run a billet connecting rod and a billet or aluminum flywheel for safe high-RPM operation.

What rocker arms should I use with this camshaft?
1.1 ratio billet roller rockers are recommended. Higher ratios (1.2+) are not advised due to excessive lift and diminishing airflow gains for cast heads.

Is this camshaft good for stroker builds?
Yes. The billet core is designed with additional clearance, making it compatible with 58mm and longer stroke crankshafts without additional modifications.

How does the 335 cam compare to the 310 grind?
The 335 offers more duration and slightly more lift, making it better suited for higher RPM builds and engines with improved cylinder head flow while still excelling in restricted setups.

What size engines benefit most from this camshaft?
Engines over 250cc, such as Tillotson 263cc and 268cc, benefit the most because the added displacement helps offset the loss of low-end torque from the long duration.
