Description

DynoCams 315-224 Camshaft for Modified Predator 224 & Wildcat 223 Engines

The DynoCams 315-224 Camshaft is the next evolution beyond the proven 308 and MOD1 grinds, offering a step up in performance for serious modified and high-RPM racing engines. Designed with moderate lift and increased duration, the 315-224 delivers a broad, aggressive powerband with a noticeable shift toward higher RPM performance while maintaining reasonable drivability for its class.

Compared to the MOD1 grind, the 315-224 features slightly more duration, which moves peak power higher in the RPM range. This results in stronger top-end performance but comes at the cost of reduced low-speed torque below approximately 4,500 RPM, especially when paired with high-flow big-valve cylinder heads and larger carburetors.

Drivability & Recreational Use

When used with Champion-style rockers, the 315-224 can still function in lightweight or lightly loaded recreational applications, such as street/strip or cruising setups that can tolerate higher clutch or CVT engagement speeds. However, it is not recommended for trail riding, heavy vehicles, towing, or applications requiring strong low-RPM torque or part-throttle drivability.

For these milder combinations, 22–24mm carburetors are recommended to help retain throttle response.

High-RPM & Racing Performance

The 315-224 truly shines in high-RPM racing engines, especially those equipped with high-flow cast heads or billet cylinder heads. It is one of the most popular camshaft choices for billet head combinations, where increased airflow allows the cam’s duration and lift to be fully utilized.

As with most performance camshafts, increasing rocker arm ratio and valve lift shifts peak power higher in the RPM range. For optimal results, the 315-224 pairs exceptionally well with:

  • EC WC946-5 cylinder head
  • 1.2 ratio rocker arms
  • 24–28mm carburetors

This combination delivers very strong mid-to-top-end power, making it ideal for competitive modified classes.

224-Core Design & Stroker Compatibility

All 315-224 camshafts are built on a .550” journal 224-core, engineered specifically for modern stroker combinations:

  • Narrowed lobes for rod clearance
  • Clearanced between lobes for 58mm stroke crankshafts
  • Thinner compression release to clear crank counterweights

This design allows the camshaft to work reliably in Predator 224cc and Tillotson 224cc engines, as well as stroked 196cc and 212cc builds using 58mm or longer crankshafts.

Engine Compatibility

Direct-Fit Applications

  • Harbor Freight Predator 224cc Non-Hemi
  • Ducar 224cc Non-Hemi
  • Wildcat 223 Hemi
  • Wildcat 240 Non-Hemi

Fits Engines with .550” Cam Journals

  • Predator 212 Hemi
  • Tillotson 212E
  • Ducar 212
  • Honda GX200 / 196cc Clone

Important Stroker Note:
For 196cc or 212cc engines using a 58mm or longer crankshaft, a 224-core camshaft is required to prevent compression-release interference. The 315-224 fully meets this requirement.

Does NOT Fit

  • Predator 212 Non-Hemi
  • Predator 224 Hemi

FAQ

What is the DynoCams 315-224 camshaft designed for?

The 315-224 is designed for modified and high-RPM racing engines using Predator 224 or Wildcat 223 platforms. It’s ideal for builds that prioritize top-end power while maintaining a broad and usable powerband.

How does the 315-224 compare to the 308 or MOD1 cams?

The 315-224 sits above the 308 and MOD1 in aggressiveness:

  • More duration than MOD1
  • Higher RPM power peak
  • Slightly less low-RPM torque below ~4,500 RPM
It’s a great step up if you want more top-end without jumping to an extreme race-only cam.

Is the 315-224 suitable for recreational or trail riding?

Not recommended. While it can work in lightweight street/strip or cruising setups with higher clutch or CVT engagement, the 315-224 is best suited for competition use. Trail riding, heavy vehicles, and low-RPM driving will suffer due to reduced low-speed torque.

What carburetor sizes work best with the 315-224?

Recommended carburetor sizes depend on the build:

  • 22–24mm for lighter recreational or mild setups
  • 24–28mm for modified racing engines
The cam performs best when airflow matches its increased duration.

What cylinder heads pair best with the 315-224?

The 315-224 works exceptionally well with high-flow cast or billet cylinder heads, especially:

  • EC WC946-5
Billet heads allow the camshaft to fully utilize its duration and lift at higher RPMs.

What rocker arm ratios should I use?

Common rocker choices:

  • 1.1 ratio: More low-RPM torque
  • 1.2 ratio (most popular): Best overall balance
  • 1.3+ ratio: Shifts power higher in RPM, recommended only for serious race builds
As rocker ratio increases, peak power moves higher in the RPM range.

Does the 315-224 work with stroked engines?

Yes. The 315-224 uses a .550” journal 224-core, specifically designed for stroker compatibility:

  • Clears 58mm and longer stroke crankshafts
  • Thinner compression release
  • No additional crank clearancing required

What engines is the 315-224 compatible with?

Direct Fit:

  • Predator 224cc Non-Hemi
  • Ducar 224cc Non-Hemi
  • Wildcat 223 Hemi
  • Wildcat 240 Non-Hemi

Fits .550” Cam Journal Engines:

  • Predator 212 Hemi
  • Tillotson 212E
  • Ducar 212
  • Honda GX200 / 196cc Clone

Does Not Fit:

  • Predator 212 Non-Hemi
  • Predator 224 Hemi

What supporting components are required?

For safe operation at the intended RPM range:

  • Billet connecting rod (mandatory)
  • Billet or aluminum flywheel (mandatory)

What RPM range does the 315-224 support?

The 315-224 is designed for engines turning up to 9,000 RPM, provided proper valvetrain components, spring pressure, and supporting hardware are used.
