Description

High-Energy Ignition Coil for Honda GX200 & Clone Engines

Unlock consistent spark and improved performance with the 138190045 Tillotson Clone Ignition Coil, custom-spec’d by EC Carburetors to deliver the strongest factory-style analog ignition in its class.

Engineered for Performance:

Stock ignition coils are often the weakest link in industrial air-cooled engines, causing unreliable spark and power loss at high RPM. To ensure the highest ignition quality for the Tillotson 196 engine class, EC Carburetors collaborated with top-tier suppliers to spec an analog coil that consistently outperforms standard units.

This Tillotson-spec coil produces approximately 10mJ (millijoules) of spark energy—compared to 4–8mJ from most factory coils. The enhanced energy output supports better combustion, improved throttle response, and reliable high-RPM performance.

One way to identify this coil is by its visibly larger coil body diameter, which reflects the increased copper windings used for higher output.

Pro Tips for Optimization:

  • Many racers use this coil to create “Hot Coils” with non-resistor plug caps and larger-diameter copper wires to maximize spark delivery.
  • For the best results, use a fine-wire iridium plug like our Torch K7RTI, which focuses spark energy for cleaner ignition and higher combustion efficiency.

Stock coils tend to retard ignition timing at high RPM, reducing power. For sanctioned or open classes, we recommend upgrading to a PVL digital ignition system with a compatible digital flywheel (sold separately), which maintains more stable timing curves and superior energy output.

Installation & Setup Tips:

  • Air gap (coil gap) settings are crucial for proper function:
    • Billet/racing flywheels: Set gap to .035"–.055"
    • Stock flywheels: Set gap to .012"–.018"
Improper gaps can simulate rev-limiting, spark misfire, or fuel delivery problems.
  • Ignition timing is set based on the end of the trailing leg of the ignition coil.

Engine Compatibility:

  • Honda GX200 / Clone 196cc
  • Box Stock Project 196
  • Tillotson 196 / 212 / 225 (with analog flywheels only — not PVL/CDI)
  • Ducar 196 / 212 / 224
  • Predator 212 (Hemi & Non-Hemi)
  • Predator 224 Non-Hemi
  • Wildcat 223 / 240

Note for Ghost 212: This engine uses a proprietary ignition and flywheel. To run this coil, the stock Ghost flywheel must be replaced.

Tech Regulations (2020):

AKRA 2020 Rules for Ignition Coil

Stock Box Stock system only and must be unaltered. Spark Plug boot must be the stock black hard plastic boot only. The factory plug wire may be replaced with an automotive 7mm wire of the same length.

NKA 2020 Rules for Ignition Coil

4.17: Ignition Coil

40.4.17.1: Ignition coil must be OEM for all classes.

40.4.17.2: Timing is non-tech.

FAQ

1. What makes this ignition coil better than stock?

It produces nearly 10mJ of spark energy, compared to 4–8mJ from typical stock coils. This results in stronger ignition and better combustion efficiency.

2. Can I use this coil on a Predator 224 Non-Hemi?

Yes, this coil fits the 224 Non-Hemi as long as you're using a compatible analog (non-digital) flywheel.

3. Is this coil compatible with PVL or CDI digital ignitions?

No, it is designed for analog ignition systems only. If you're using a digital system (like PVL), you need a specific digital coil and flywheel.

4. What spark plug do you recommend with this coil?

We recommend using a fine-wire iridium spark plug like the Torch K7RTI for optimal energy transfer and combustion.

5. What’s the correct air gap setting for this coil?

  • For billet or racing flywheels: Set to .035"–.055"
  • For stock flywheels: Set to .012"–.018"

6. Will this coil work with the Ghost 212 engine?

Not directly. The Ghost uses a unique flywheel/coil setup. You’ll need to replace the flywheel to use this coil reliably.
