HL-304WX-5K Dominator Tillotson Carburetor Kit for Open Modified Clone Engines (Methanol)


The EC Dominator HL-304WX-5K is a purpose-built, race-calibrated methanol diaphragm carburetor kit designed for Open-class GX200-style clone engines. Based on our championship-proven HL-304WX-13 for the Briggs Animal, this version is tailored for 14.5ci+ (236cc+) clone engines with modified cast heads, high-lift cams (up to .400”), and serious airflow demands.


Capable of flowing over 100 CFM, the HL-304WX-5K delivers unmatched acceleration, throttle response, and top-end power — ideal for short oval and sprint-track kart racing where split-second performance wins races.


Optimized for Methanol Open-Class Power

This model is precision-tuned for methanol-fueled engines running stock-style cast heads with major porting and camshaft upgrades. Its 1.00” throttle bore and .900” venturi maximize performance across the entire RPM range without sacrificing drivability or throttle control.

Fuel Requirements

  • Use Only Pure Methanol
  • Do not use:

 Oxygenated fuels may require fine-tuning of needle settings.


Post-Race Methanol Flush Instructions

To protect internal components from corrosion and swelling:

  1. Mix 8–12 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil with 1 gallon of premium non-ethanol gas or use 2-cycle premix.
  2. Disconnect from methanol tank and feed the fuel system with this mix.
  3. Start engine and let it run until it stumbles or emits black smoke (indicates methanol is purged).
  4. This process preserves gaskets, diaphragms, and metal surfaces from damage.


Carburetor Specs & Initial Settings

  • Throttle Bore: 1.000" (25.4 mm)
  • Venturi Size: 0.900" (22.86 mm)
  • Needle Settings (Initial):
    • High Side: 1 turn out
    • Low Side: 2.5 turns out

Most tuning can be done on the high side needle only — ideal for quick on-track adjustments.


Approved Fuel Pumps

Only use:

  • Walbro FPC-1
  • EC TFPC-1

Not compatible with:

  • Briggs & Stratton fuel pumps
  • Mikuni or Mikuni-style clones
  • Square-style plastic pumps

Q1: What engines are compatible with the HL-304WX-5K kit?

A: This carburetor is compatible with Honda GX200-style clone small block engines ranging from 196cc to 240cc, including Predator 212 (Hemi and Non-Hemi), Predator 224, Tillotson 196–268cc, Wildcat 223/240, Ducar 196–224, and Ghost 212.


Q2: Can I run gasoline or E85 through this carburetor?

A: No. The HL-304WX-5K is tuned specifically for pure methanol. Do not use gasoline, E85, E91, or methanol with top lube additives. Improper fuel use can damage components and affect performance.


Q3: Does the carburetor come ready to race out of the box?

A: Yes. It comes hand-tuned with baseline needle settings:

  • High Side: 1 turn out
  • Low Side: 2.5 turns out
    Final tuning should be done at the track based on elevation, temperature, and fuel quality.


Q4: What kind of fuel pump do I need?

A: Only use Walbro FPC-1 or EC TFPC-1 round-style fuel pumps. Other pumps, including electric or Mikuni clones, are not supported and may lead to performance issues.


Q5: How should I store or flush the carburetor after a race?

A: Methanol must be flushed from the system after each race day to prevent corrosion. Run a mix of Marvel Mystery Oil and non-ethanol gas through the carb (or use 2-cycle pre-mix) until the engine sputters or stalls with black smoke. This removes methanol and protects components.


Q6: Can this be used for recreational karting or idle operation?

A: No. Tillotson diaphragm carburetors like the HL-304WX-5K are racing-only components. They are not designed to idle or be used for non-competitive/recreational purposes.
