Description

EC Cylinder Head Stud Kit – Honda GX200 / Clone / Predator Engines

Upgrade your race engine’s reliability with the EC Cylinder Head Stud Kit, specifically engineered to replace weak factory head bolts in Honda GX200, 196cc Clone, and Predator 212 engines. Ideal for high-output, high-compression builds, this stud kit helps maintain consistent clamping force on the cylinder head under extreme heat and pressure.

Factory head bolts are prone to stretching, which can lead to head gasket failure, loss of compression, or even catastrophic engine damage. This precision kit eliminates those risks by offering stronger, more secure alloy steel studs and serrated flange nuts.

Why This Kit Stands Out

Unlike generic stud kits, the EC kit features two custom stud lengths, specifically tailored for Tillotson R-Series blocks that lack dowel pin holes. The shorter upper studs prevent bottoming out, ensuring maximum torque transfer and gasket sealing—especially critical on decked heads and thin gasket builds.

Key Features:

  • Replaces factory head bolts to improve durability and prevent head gasket blowouts
  • Designed for high-compression, high-temperature racing engines
  • Two different stud lengths: ideal for Tillotson R-Series blocks without dowel pins
  • Prevents nuts from bottoming out, improving head sealing pressure
  • Machined from high-strength alloy steel
  • Includes serrated flange nuts for secure, vibration-resistant clamping

Kit Includes:

  • (2) M8-1.25 x 74mm Alloy Steel Head Studs (Long – lower head bolts)
  • (2) M8-1.25 x 65mm Alloy Steel Head Studs (Short – upper head bolts)
  • (4) 8mm Serrated Flange Nuts

Installation Instructions:

  1. Clean block threads with an M8-1.25 thread chaser (not a tap). Remove old thread locker to ensure proper torque.
  2. Apply red Loctite to the block-side threads. Torque studs to 5 ft-lbs using a stud installation tool.
    • Short studs go on the top, long studs on the bottom of the cylinder bore.
  3. Test-fit the cylinder head to verify the nuts do not bottom out.
    • Decked heads or thin gaskets may require spacers to clamp the cylinder head
  4. Install the head gasket and head. Torque flange nuts to 26 ft-lbs.

Over-tightening or improper installation can damage the block or strip threads. Use caution and proper tools.

Engine Compatibility:

  • Honda GX200 / Clone 196cc
  • Tillotson 196R / 212R / 225RS / 236 / 268
  • Ducar 196 / 212 / 224
  • Wildcat 223 / 240
  • Predator 212 (Hemi & Non-Hemi)
  • Predator 224 (Non-Hemi)
  • Ghost 212

Designed for engines with M8-1.25 head threads
Not tested on engines with different thread pitches or metric variants

FAQ

Q1: Why use a head stud kit instead of stock head bolts?

A: Stock head bolts can stretch under high compression and heat, causing gasket leaks. Stud kits maintain consistent clamping force, improving engine sealing and preventing blown head gaskets.

Q2: What makes this EC stud kit different from others?

A: EC’s kit uses two different stud lengths, custom-made for Tillotson R-Series blocks that lack dowel pin holes. This ensures the nuts seat properly and don’t bottom out—a common cause of failure in race engines.

Q3: Will this fit my Predator 212 engine?

A: Yes, this kit fits Predator 212 Hemi and Non-Hemi models, along with Honda GX200, Tillotson, Clone, Ducar, and Wildcat small block engines with M8-1.25 thread pitch.

Q4: What torque specs should I use during installation?

  • Torque studs into the block to 5 ft-lbs with red Loctite
  • Torque head nuts to 26 ft-lbs
Make sure the nuts clamp the head without bottoming out.

Q5: Do I need to modify my block to use this kit?

A: No block modifications are required. However, if your cylinder head has been decked or you use a thin gasket, confirm that the nuts clamp tightly before final torque. Improper fitment can cause thread damage.
