EC Carburetor's Brand New Tillotson 228R MKII Racing Engine
EC Carburetors are the purveyors of performance and innovation. Working with companies like Tillotson Racing, we can build engines and components that raise the bar in small engine performance without draining your wallet. Our new 228R engine is the next step for our growing engine lineup. With more stroke and now with a lighter flywheel and bigger valve cylinder head, this engine goes beyond the spec 225RS and original 228R, expanding its capabilities and power potential to make the ideal mini bike engine package.
Each engine is hand-built in the USA by EC's engine builders.

72mm Tillotson Reinforced Block—EC Carburetors designed the Tillotson Reinforced Block to create new engine packages like the 225RS and 228R and other highly modified race engines. We made the block thicker and more robust to reduce flex and distortion, which prevents power loss through crank flex and blow-by between the piston and cylinder.
Tillotson Racing Lightweight Hypereutectic Piston: The piston uses the latest technology and design utilizing a racing slipper skirt vs. the conventional barrel skirt design of other stock pistons. This piston uses an aluminum alloy with high silicon for a lower thermal expansion coefficient, allowing tighter tolerance for superior performance and longevity over stock Chinese cast pistons used in other engines and kits. The low slipper skirt design also allows more clearance in the rotating assembly for larger stroke crankshafts. We also made the compression height shorter by moving the pin's location and using a smaller diameter wrist pin. These improvements allowed the use of a longer rod while reducing weight in the rotating assembly.
Tillotson Racing Rings: Tillotson Rings are specifically designed for the Tillotson Racing Lightweight Hypereutectic Piston. Compared to other stock piston ring sets, these rings reduce friction and increase cylinder sealing to improve mechanical efficiency. We specify the ring tension to be better suited for racing applications.
EC Forged Rod: EC Carburetors designed the original forged rod for Tillotson 225RS engines, using a 55mm stroke crankshaft. Our new EC Billet Rods are designed to allow more stroke with standard clone journal crankshafts and bigger camshafts. Using what we have learned in the development, we made a stronger rod for RPMs above 6500rpms and higher output. This rod is made in-house and is exclusive to our engine combination.
56mm Crankshaft - Our 228R is the first racing engine to come standard with a 56mm stock forged crankshaft. There is no replacement for displacement. We're giving you an additional 4cc. Standard 225 engine 72Mm bore x 55mm stroke = 223.93, EC 228R 72mm Bore x 56mm Stroke = 228. The increased stroke will help make additional power across the board with a nice bump in the lower RPMs. Using the Tillotson Racing Lightweight Hypereutectic Piston, we have more than enough room for the additional stroke where other stock cast pistons do not.
.265 Banzai: EC Designed this cam for a broad torque band specifically for mini bikes and karts that need excellent low-end torque, whether it's accelerating from a dead stop or low-speed cornering. Peak power is around 7500, but with our 26-lb springs, we can rev the engine at over 9000 rpm, which is not recommended for longevity. The cam would be duplicated for the 225RS engines as it was ideal for spec engine sprint racing.
Wildcat WC946 Cylinder Head: The cylinder head is another EC-designed component that significantly improves the factory-style non-hemi heads. The new head has a natural 18cc combustion chamber with an improved spark plug location. It has been heavily reinforced with more material around the ports and a larger cross-sectional area for better airflow capabilities. The valves are upgraded from the original 228R's 27/25mm factory valves to stainless steel 31/25mm valves.
SK201 Rev Wheel: The other upgrade from the original 228R is the lightweight SK201 billet flywheel. The SK200 was made to comply with "Box Stock" classes that have a minimum weight rule. However, modified engines do not have to comply, so we made the SK201, a lighter version with identical fins and 34° ignition timing. The lighter flywheel means the engine isn't using as much power to accelerate the flywheel; in other words, there is less parasitic loss, which means more power for better acceleration.
EC WC22 Carburetor Kit: We have made it better by taking one of the most popular carburetors used on mini bikes. The Wildcat WC22 is our original casting, which gives better control of the fuel circuitry and setup and consistency over cheap "VM22" copies—by going direct with the carburetor manufacturer, then machined and blueprinted by the world's winningest small engine carburetor builders. Not only is this a considerable jump over the stock carburetor, but it's also a leap over re-jetted identical carburetors sold through Kart part warehouse distributors. We also built our intake manifold to fit better on mini bikes or other chassis with limited space. This intake also improves the signal to the carburetor and allows more airflow, resulting in better performance. This carburetor is the ideal size for this combination of parts.
