Description

Tillotson HL-357B 4-Cycle Methanol Carburetor – High-Performance Racing Upgrade

Built for Methanol. Tuned for Power. Proven on the Track.

The Tillotson HL-357B Carburetor is a purpose-built, methanol-ready performance carb designed by EC(Birt) Carburetors in 1998 to solve a common issue in small engine racing: the unreliable stock fuel tanks on Briggs & Stratton Flathead engines. Originally developed as a direct replacement for the stock Raptor carburetor, the HL-357B has since become a top choice for GX200, Clone 196cc, and 212cc OHV engines running methanol fuel.

Featuring a tunable diaphragm system, this carburetor provides racers with precise fuel control and consistent performance under demanding race conditions. Unlike traditional float-style carbs, the diaphragm design allows for better fuel metering under vibration, angle changes, and varying track loads—making it ideal for karting and small engine racing.

Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: Methanol
  • Venturi Diameter: .625"
  • Throttle Bore: .810"
  • Flange Bolt Spacing: 1.8125"
  • Pump Stack: Standard Volume (Single Stack – Gas Plate Setup)
  • Applications:
    • Briggs Flathead (Raptor)
    • GX200 / 196cc Clones / 212cc OHV Engines

Recommended EC Pro Kits for Maintenance & Rebuilds:

  • Gaskets & Diaphragms: Use EC P13-DG or P2-DG (if allowed by rule set)
  • Full Rebuild Kits: Use EC P13-RK or P5-RK (if legal in your class)

Why Choose the HL-357B?

  • Proven Performance on Methanol – Designed specifically for methanol use in high-demand racing environments.
  • Easy Tuning – Adjustable diaphragm system allows racers to fine-tune fuel delivery on the fly.
  • Versatile Compatibility – Works as a bolt-on upgrade for multiple 4-cycle engine platforms.
  • EC Racing Heritage – Developed by EC for racers, with decades of field-tested success behind it.

Important Notes:

  • Always confirm legality within your racing class or sanctioning body.
  • For gas applications, a different carb or plate setup is recommended.
  • Methanol fuel requires more frequent maintenance—use Pro Kits for best results.

FAQ

Q1: What engines is the Tillotson HL-357B carburetor compatible with?

A: The HL-357B is designed for Briggs Flathead (Raptor), GX200, 196cc Clone, and 212cc OHV 4-cycle engines running methanol. It replaces the stock carburetors in these platforms for improved performance.

Q2: Is the HL-357B compatible with gas engines?

A: This model is specifically designed for methanol fuel. While it uses gas-style pump plates, tuning it for gasoline is not recommended. For gas engines, consider a dedicated gasoline carburetor.

Q3: What’s the benefit of the diaphragm carburetor design?

A: Unlike float-style carbs, the diaphragm system ensures consistent fuel delivery under vibration, cornering, and high-G conditions. It’s ideal for karting and uneven race tracks.

Q4: What rebuild or service kits should I use with the HL-357B?

A:

  • For gaskets/diaphragms only: EC P13-DG or P2-DG (if allowed)
  • For full rebuilds: EC P13-RK or P5-RK (check legality in your class)

Q5: Is the HL-357B legal in my racing class?

A: Always consult your specific racing class rulebook. The HL-357B is legal in many methanol classes, but rebuild kits or modifications may be subject to regulation.
