Description

Wildcat 460cc Big Block Engine – Pull Start

The Wildcat 460cc Big Block Engine is a high-displacement, high-torque powerplant built for demanding performance applications. Featuring a heavy-duty reinforced crankcase with a 10-bolt side cover, this engine delivers superior strength and rigidity compared to standard big-block clone engines, making it ideal for both racing and heavy recreational use.

Big block engines are known for producing tremendous low-end torque, and the Wildcat 460 excels in applications where torque and durability matter most. It is well-suited for golf carts, mud boats, and utility vehicles, as well as competitive platforms such as UAS karts, racing lawn mowers, and Mini Cup cars.

Loosely based on the Honda GX390 architecture, the Wildcat 460cc is one of the largest displacement big-block clone engines available, outperforming comparable 390cc, 420cc, and 440cc engines in torque, power potential, and structural strength. This version is pull-start only; electric start variants are also available.

Large Bore & Long Stroke Performance

The Wildcat 460 features a 92mm bore, one of the largest bores available in a big-block clone engine. A flat-top piston is used to increase compression and improve flame propagation, resulting in more efficient combustion and increased power potential.

Paired with the large bore is a 69mm stroke crankshaft, which is longer than most big-block clone engines. The increased stroke improves piston speed and port velocity while providing greater mechanical leverage on the crankshaft—significantly enhancing low-end and mid-range torque, where big blocks shine.

Engine Specifications

  • Displacement: 460cc
  • Bore: 92mm
  • Stroke: 69mm
  • Deck Height: ~175mm / 6.890"
  • Compression Ratio: ~8.85:1
    • ~10:1 with EC 8272 Billet Connecting Rod
  • Output Shaft: 1"
  • Ignition Timing: ~11° (stock)
  • EPA Rated Horsepower: 16 HP
    • Actual horsepower will vary based on dyno calibration, correction factors, and testing procedure. For accurate comparison, engines should be tested on the same dyno under identical conditions.

Engine Mounting Bolt Pattern

  • Wildcat 460 Bolt Spacing:
    • 8.5" Length
    • 3.5" – 4" Width (slotted)
  • Standard GX390 / Predator 420 Bolt Pattern:
    • 7-5/8" × 3-3/8" (center-to-center)

The Wildcat 460 uses a wider mounting pattern than standard GX390 and most 7-bolt clone engines.

Aftermarket Compatibility

Compatible with most Honda GX390 and Big Block Clone aftermarket components, including:

  • Flywheels
  • Camshafts
  • Crankshafts (including stroker applications)
  • Cylinder Heads (92mm bore head gasket required)
  • Hardware & Bearings

Note: This engine uses a 10-bolt block and requires a 10-bolt side cover and gasket.

Connecting Rod Recommendation

While many aftermarket billet connecting rods designed for GX390/clone engines will physically fit, we strongly recommend the EC 8272 Billet Connecting Rod. This rod provides:

  • Improved clearance between the dipper and counterweights
  • Better geometry for high-performance builds
  • A higher piston position toward zero deck, increasing compression

Warranty & Intended Use Notice

This engine is intended for performance applications and modification. Due to its racing-oriented design and use, no warranty is offered.

Shipping & Delivery Information

Due to the size and weight of this engine, it is classified as oversize freight, resulting in higher shipping costs.

  • All engines are fully insured
  • Signature required at delivery

FAQ

What is the Wildcat 460cc engine best used for?

The Wildcat 460cc is designed for high-torque and high-performance applications. It works exceptionally well in:

  • Golf carts and heavy recreational vehicles
  • Mud boats and utility equipment
  • UAS karts
  • Racing lawn mowers
  • Mini Cup cars and similar racing platforms

This engine is built for users who need strong low-end torque and durability, not for stock replacement use.

How does the Wildcat 460 compare to a GX390 or Predator 420?

The Wildcat 460cc is larger, stronger, and more torque-focused than a GX390, Predator 420, or most 440cc engines. It features:

  • Greater displacement (460cc)
  • A larger 92mm bore
  • A longer 69mm stroke
  • A reinforced 10-bolt block

The result is more torque, better durability under load, and significantly higher performance potential.

Is this engine compatible with GX390 aftermarket parts?

Yes. The Wildcat 460 is compatible with most Honda GX390 and big block clone aftermarket components, including:

  • Flywheels
  • Camshafts
  • Crankshafts (including stroker cranks)
  • Cylinder heads (92mm bore head gasket required)
  • Bearings and hardware
Note: This engine uses a 10-bolt block, so a 10-bolt side cover and gasket are required.

Does this engine have electric start?

This version is pull-start only. Electric start versions of the Wildcat 460cc are also available separately.

What bore and stroke does the Wildcat 460 use?

The Wildcat 460 features a 92mm bore and a 69mm stroke. This large bore and long stroke combination increases compression potential, improves flame propagation, and delivers excellent low- and mid-range torque.

What compression ratio does the Wildcat 460 have?

  • Stock compression ratio: ~8.85:1
  • With EC 8272 billet connecting rod: ~10:1

The higher compression improves throttle response and power, especially in performance builds.

What is the output shaft size?

The Wildcat 460cc engine comes with a 1-inch output shaft, making it compatible with a wide range of clutches, torque converters, and drive systems commonly used in big-block applications.

What is the engine mounting bolt pattern?

The Wildcat 460 uses a wider mounting bolt pattern than standard GX390 and Predator 420 engines:

  • 8.5" length x 3.5"–4" width (slotted)

This should be verified before installation, especially when replacing a smaller big-block engine.

Why does this engine have a 10-bolt side cover?

The 10-bolt side cover increases crankcase rigidity and strength compared to traditional 7-bolt designs. This added reinforcement helps the block handle higher cylinder pressure, increased RPM, and aggressive performance modifications.

Is the Wildcat 460 a good platform for modifications?

Yes. The Wildcat 460 is an excellent base for performance builds, including:

  • Camshaft upgrades
  • Carburetor and intake upgrades
  • High-compression pistons
  • Stroker crankshaft setups

The reinforced block and improved clearances make it well-suited for aggressive modifications.

Which connecting rod do you recommend?

While many GX390-style billet rods will fit, we strongly recommend the EC 8272 billet connecting rod. It offers:

  • Better clearance between the dipper and counterweights
  • Improved reliability at higher RPM
  • Increased piston height toward zero deck for higher compression

Is there a warranty on the Wildcat 460 engine?

No. This engine is intended for performance use and modification, and no warranty is provided. All engines are sold for racing and off-road applications only.

Is the 16 HP rating accurate?

The 16 HP figure is an EPA rating. Actual horsepower will vary based on dyno calibration, testing conditions, and modifications. For accurate comparison, engines should be tested on the same dyno under identical conditions.
