Description

XHR-7K EC Billet Intimidator Diaphragm Carburetor Kit for GX390 / Big Block Clone Engines (Methanol)

The XHR-7K EC Intimidator Series Carburetor is a purpose-built, high-performance diaphragm carburetor system designed for methanol-fueled Honda GX390-style big block clone engines. It’s built from EC’s race-proven Twilight Zone 3+3 Tillotson architecture—evolved and optimized for today’s competitive karting and small engine racing.

Built from Billet. Tuned to Intimidate.

Unlike standard cast Tillotson HR carburetors, the XHR is machined entirely from billet—eliminating weak points and enhancing both flow and durability. This monolithic unibody design includes an integrated velocity stack and a re-engineered infinite radius venturi, adapted from our HL-series design and scaled for larger displacement engines.

We’ve also removed the restrictive high-side velocity booster found in OEM HR carbs, resulting in significantly increased airflow and top-end power. This design supports high-lift cam profiles, larger valves, and engines running sustained wide-open throttle in racing conditions.

Legacy Engineering Meets Modern CNC Precision

EC’s Twilight Zone 3+3 blueprinting process—once only available through custom race shops—now comes standard thanks to modern CNC manufacturing. Each XHR-7K Intimidator includes:

  • EC’s 3-piece hand-fit throttle shaft system
  • Machined fuel pump plate for consistent delivery
  • EC’s billet needle assembly for precision fuel control
  • Dyno-tuned and track-tested blueprinting built into every carb

What used to cost racers over $1,000 in custom machine work in the 80s–2000s is now accessible at a fraction of the price—without sacrificing quality or performance.

Engine Compatibility

The XHR-7K is tuned specifically for methanol-fueled big block Honda-clone engines, including:

  • Honda GX390
  • Predator 420
  • Wildcat 460
  • Tillotson 379 / 460
  • Other GX390-style big block clones

Note: The included billet intake manifold bolts directly to most heads but may require minor port matching for optimal airflow due to casting differences.

Kit Includes:

  • XHR Billet Intimidator Carburetor (Methanol-Tuned)
  • GX390-Compatible Intake Manifold
  • High-Flow Fuel Filter
  • EC Intimidator Linkage Kit
  • Round-Style Fuel Pump (Walbro FPC-1 or EC TFPC-1)

Fuel Requirements

  • Use ONLY Pure Methanol
  • Do NOT use:
    • Ethanol-blended fuels (E85, E91)
    • Gasoline
    • Methanol with top lube additives

Oxygenated fuels may require slight needle tuning for optimal performance.

Methanol Post-Race Flush Instructions

Methanol is corrosive and must be flushed out after each race day to protect internal components:

  1. Mix 8–12 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil with 1 gallon of non-ethanol premium gas (or 2-cycle pre-mix).
  2. Disconnect methanol tank and connect the fuel system to your flush mixture.
  3. Start the engine and run until it emits black smoke or stalls — indicating the methanol is purged.
  4. This protects aluminum, steel, and soft components from oxidation, swelling, or breakdown.

Carburetor Specs & Settings

  • Throttle Bore: 1.355" (34.5 mm)
  • Venturi Size: 0.900" (22.86 mm)

Initial Needle Settings:

  • High Side: 1 turn out
  • Low Side: 2.5 turns out

Final tuning should be done at the track. Most adjustments can be made using the high side needle only, allowing for quick tuning between heats.

Approved Fuel Pumps

Use ONLY:

  • Walbro FPC-1
  • EC TFPC-1

Not Supported:

  • Briggs & Stratton fuel pumps
  • Mikuni or clone fuel pumps
  • Plastic square-style knockoffs
  • Electric fuel pumps

If you plan to use a different pump, contact us before ordering to confirm compatibility.

FAQ

Q1: What engines is the XHR-7K compatible with?

The XHR-7K is built for Honda GX390-style big block clone engines including:

  • Honda GX390
  • Predator 420
  • Wildcat 460
  • Tillotson 460
  • Ducar, Ghost, and other GX390-based clones

If your engine uses a similar head and bolt pattern, the included intake manifold should bolt on—though minor port matching is recommended for best performance.

Q2: Is this carburetor compatible with gasoline or ethanol?

No. The XHR-7K is specifically tuned for pure methanol fuel. Do not use:

  • Gasoline
  • E85 or E91 ethanol blends
  • Methanol mixed with top lube additives

Oxygenated fuels may work with needle adjustments, but for peak performance, pure methanol is required.

Q3: Does the carburetor idle?

No. Like most diaphragm racing carbs, the XHR-7K is not designed for idle or recreational use. It may load up at low RPMs. It’s best used in competitive kart or small engine racing where throttle input is continuous.

Q4: What’s included in the XHR-7K kit?

  • XHR Billet Methanol Carburetor
  • Intake Manifold
  • EC Intimidator Linkage Kit
  • High-Flow Fuel Filter
  • Round-Style Fuel Pump (Walbro-style)

Q5: What fuel pump do I need?

Use only:

  • Walbro FPC-1
  • EC TFPC-1 (round-style)

Do not use:

  • Briggs & Stratton pumps
  • Mikuni or Mikuni knockoffs
  • Square plastic fuel pumps
  • Electric pumps

If you're considering a different pump, contact EC for compatibility before purchase.

Q6: How do I flush the system after using methanol?

  1. Mix 8–12 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil with 1 gallon of non-ethanol gasoline or use a 2-cycle mix.
  2. Connect to the fuel system in place of the methanol tank.
  3. Start engine and run until it emits black smoke or stalls.
This protects internal parts from corrosion and swelling caused by methanol exposure.
